24 Goals For 2024

Some (hopefully) attainable ambitions for the new year

I’ve kind of gone back and forth on the whole New Year’s resolution thing. When I was younger I made resolutions every year faithfully (in fact, my very first — and not terribly good — article that I ever wrote on Medium was on this topic). The last couple of years, though, I didn’t feel particularly inclined to put my resolutions down on paper. That’s not to say that I didn’t have ambitions, I guess I just didn’t feel the need to write them down.

Recently, however, I saw Melissa Rach’s story about making 24 goals for 2024 and loved the idea, so I’m jumping on the bandwagon. I think the fact that they’re goals rather than resolutions was part of the reason for my enthusiasm; I associate resolutions with high expectations and inevitable disappointment, whereas goals seem more actionable.

A quick note — I’ve tried to make as many of these as possible (though admittedly not all) SMART goals. Melissa goes into what this means a little bit more in her article, so I’d recommend reading that if you’d like to know more. But basically, SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. The idea is, you’re more likely to then be able to stick with them than with vague or unrealistic resolutions.
