I agree wholeheartedly. It's very difficult to write music, novels, etc that are completely new. Like your friend, we're all subconsciously influenced by other artists. But, because we all have a slightly difference experience and perspective in life, I think we can all still make valuable contributions, even if they're not 100% original (of course purposeful plagiarism is a different matter)
