A few months ago I was feeling a bit…well, down. I was in quarantine due to the pandemic, yet every time I opened Instagram I saw people off on adventures, on vacations or visiting friends. So in a moment of frustration and jealousy, I decided that I was going to delete social media. If I couldn’t see what people were doing, it wouldn’t make me upset, right? However, it ended up being an even longer detox than I had originally intended, and it was surprisingly educational. Here are a few of the things I learned:

  1. Social media friends aren’t always real friends.

I know, I know. It seems like this should have been obvious. But I was unpleasantly surprised by how many people who I interacted with regularly on social media no longer stayed in contact with me after I’d deleted my accounts. I’ll admit, I was slightly depressed about this at first. However, once I’d gotten over the initial disappointment this caused me, I was actually glad that I’d found this out. These weren’t people that really cared about me, they were people who cared about likes, comments, followers, and Snapchat streaks.

On the upside, though, there were also people who made the effort to text or email instead. Not all of them were people I thought I was super close with, but the fact that they wanted to keep in touch regardless…
