I'm so sorry you went through this, Michele. There is something uniquely hurtful about parents or authority figures saying things like that, especially when you're already self-conscious as a teenager.

I was super skinny as a young teenager but put on a few pounds in my later teens (I was still small from being a dancer but not as stick thin as I had been) and one of my relatives made a comment about it at a holiday dinner. He said he was just trying to be "helpful" so that I wouldn't get fat like his daughters. It made me feel horrible about myself for months afterwards. I wish people would realize what a big difference their careless words can make!
