I've started to do this too. A few of my closest friends will then ask follow up questions, but most people just move on with the conversation. It's frustrating and there have been times when it's felt quite hurtful, also, but ultimately I think you're right - people are only asking as a courtesy, and don't actually want to hear the truth.
