I've wondered about this kind of thing, too - I do think media can have a strong influence on what behaviors are deemed acceptable. I'm not a smoker, but I do remember thinking that it was quite a cool thing to do when I was younger, and a big part of that was seeing characters smoking in movies or TV shows that I liked.
