My heart breaks for you reading this. No one should have to go through these things, especially as a child. I admire you so much for breaking the cycle of abuse and addiction.

You're absolutely right about how drugs and alcohol can change a person, and also that they'll almost always prioritize the substance they're addicted to over people in their life. That happened with a friend of mine recently. I was so hurt by it at first, but eventually I realized that it had nothing to do with me - it was her addiction.
