Sorry you had this experience, I can understand why you'd be shaken. Unfortunately I do think muggings and attacks can happen, even in cities that are thought of as relatively "safe," though maybe not by an entire gang of people. You made a good choice in getting out of there, I think - not getting injured or killed is more important than possessions, even ones with sentimental value!
