The Five Underrated Christmas Movies I Watch Every Year

The final installment of my seasonal film lists

I have a very long and specific list of films that I watch leading up to Christmas each year. This list includes many popular titles like Elf, It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, and Bridget Jone’s Diary.

Then there are also the movies that I know are popular, and many of my friends love, but that I studiously avoid — namely Die Hard (please don’t fight me, but I just can’t get on board with this being a Christmas film!) and Love Actually. Love Actually in particular is a contentious film for me, and while I enjoy certain aspects of it, there are just so many problematic storylines. For one thing, Natalie is not fat! But I digress.

For this list, though, I wanted to focus on Christmas films that I consider to be underrated. In general, these are movies that when I talk to people about them, they’ve never seen them, or sometimes even heard of them. So if you’re looking for some new Christmas movies to watch this year, and you don’t want to have to sit through another Netflix movie about a spoiled city girl getting stuck in the country during a snowstorm, or an American nanny who falls in love with a European prince (I’m convinced those are the only two storylines), then read on.
