This has been a difficult question for me as well, but there have been some relationships that I've finally let go of because the pain/frustration from them was so much more pronounced than any positive aspects. And ultimately it's been for the best.

Also, I think sometimes three can be an awkward number - not always, of course, but often I've noticed that it can result in a two-against-one situation like what you described.
