Wow, I didn't know that they had earthquake-proof building techniques so long ago!

The structure was designed to rattle without falling apart to prevent earthquake damage. This was achieved with a “bookshelf” technique that left slivers of open space between the bricks. The bricks were attached to clay layers above and below but not to each other.
