In the year 1395, Europe was in transition mode between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Black Death had ravaged Europe and just one of the many significant consequences of this was that the Catholic Church had become even wealthier than before. Much land and assets had been left to the church by the dearly departed and still more had been used as payment toward hospital bills. Commodities like wine were also accepted and in such volume a cellar was formed beneath what was then a hospice-style church-owned hospital to store all the goods — mostly wine it seems.
