Yep, I've had issues with this too (also an American passport holder). I've always followed the rules, but one time I wasn't given an exit stamp when leaving Spain. Because of that I was almost detained in Vienna because they thought I'd been in the Schengen area for 6 months straight. So always make sure to get an exit stamp, even if they don't automatically give one to you!
